Elissa de la Cruz grew up between a family house in Triana and a flat in Camberwell — learning palmas at one end of the summer and choir harmony at the other. She sings in both languages, frequently inside the same bar of music. It began as an accident in a Peckham rehearsal room; it is now the thing people book her for.
Her writing sits between the copla her grandmother played on Sunday afternoons and the late-night electronic pop she found in south London. The songs are made slowly and mostly after midnight, built around a nylon-string guitar and whatever the room gives back. She plays as a trio and, when the venue can take it, brings a cajón.

Velvet Spell
A slow soul song about missing someone who is standing right in front of you. Warm bass, brushed drums, a Rhodes holding the middle, and a vocal kept close to the microphone the whole way through. The title comes from the last verse — be like a spell on me — and the arrangement behaves like one: the band never rises above her, and the chorus keeps asking until it stops sounding like a question. Written with Ingvar Steinberg in Triana, finished in a Bermondsey basement.
